Lending a hand in America can mean starting a volunteer firefighting company, protesting injustice, or even piecing together a quilt. This one was made by Sunday school girls in Augusta, Maine, for Civil War soldiers. It included over 150 handwritten inscriptions offering comfort and encouragement.
When we think about big moments of change in American history, we often think about iconic leaders. But everyday people—like the young women who made this quilt—have also joined together to create change, the inspiration for our 2016 theme: #AmericaParticipates.
This week, we'll explore participation by looking at examples from our textile collections, including quilts, samplers, clothing, and more. http://s.si.edu/CivWarQuilt
