The Civil War meant a huge increase in the need for blankets, uniforms, shoes, and other equipment as more enlisted men and officers were added to the ranks. Outfitting the two armies required voluntary labor by what amounted to another army of women and girls on the home fronts.
This Civil War quilt shows the handiwork of some of these women and girls. Handwritten messages by different writers appear on the various squares. Most squares contain religious messages, but some secular inscriptions are evident: "Three cheers for the Red, white & blue 1864" and "God save Gen. Grant and his brave men." Are there treasured textiles in your family history—perhaps a wedding gown, military uniform, or quilt that raised funds for a special cause?
