This is a cast of Lucy, a partial skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis, which existed from about 3.95 to 2.95 M years ago.
She is the most famous female early human fossil and was found in modern-day Ethiopia. Her skeleton exhibits a combination of ape-like and human features, yet she’s more closely related to us than she is to living apes.

Like us, she walked upright on two legs and had small canine teeth. Her species is a good example of our ancestors’ ability to cope with changing environments because it persisted through a long period of time, over many episodes of global and local climate change.
Legend has it that her nickname comes from the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” which the research team played in their field camp while celebrating her discovery. -Briana
