Photo by @Gerd Ludwig. Today marks the 5th anniversary of the earthquake which led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. At that time, I was in Kiev, Ukraine, continuing my work documenting the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. As news of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima came on TV, I was with a 70 year old liquidator of the Chernobyl accident. Liquidators were civil or military workers who were involved in the cleanup during and following the nuclear accident. A major in the army, he was on duty when the Chernobyl explosion occurred. After the Chernobyl disaster, he had two heart attacks and developed severe stomach cancer.
