The relationship between an image and its caption was consolidated in Brazil largely through its most important publication of the kind, O Cruzeiro. Its format, largely based on foreign publications such as Life and Vue, gradually developed its own language thanks to the extraordinary talent of their contributors. José Medeiros, was perhaps the most iconic piece of this revolution. At 25, invited by Jean Manzon, he joined the staff of O Cruzeiro and together they reshaped Brazilian Photo-Journalism for the following two decades. When I look at Medeiros work, I think of what dictates the difference between an artistic and a photo journalistic image.
