Photo: @davidburnettfoto // Last year after a hundred years of majestic presence, a large Cottonwood known as the Balmville Tree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balmville_Tree) , in Newburgh, had to be cut down. At one point this huge tree was over 125' high, but age caught up with it, and in spite of many attempts to get it back on a healthy track, it was finally taken down last fall. A 10' high stump still remains, along with a few plaques which tell of its storied past. Since then I have been keeping my eye out for something arboresque of a similar nature, and about a month ago while driving along Balmville road, about 1/2 mile from the old "Tree," I saw a stately tree on the edge of the Powelton Golf Club. I have no clue what kind of tree it is, nor even which fairway it represents 150 yards from the green, but it's one of those trees which by its mere presence is both stunning and awe inspiring. The fact that winter stripped it of its leaves gives an even clearer view of how it is formed.
