Spoke at the May Day Rally this morning.
We are celebrating May Day in a cautious mood. The global economy is slowing down, and many workers are worried and anxious. This is an issue for Singapore too. Our workforce is changing rapidly, with the proportion of PMETs growing steadily. Our Labour Movement must adapt to look after their needs as well.
One way is through skills training. NTUC will tie up with universities to offer skills training for mid-career professionals. The government will do our part too - for every $1 NTUC raises, we will chip in $3, for a total of $200 million.
These are times of rapid change. We must take the challenges seriously, but we can do so with confidence. The Government and Labour Movement are ready. With the people’s support, Together As One - we can overcome the challenges ahead. – LHL
