In the tunnels of Butte de Vauquois in the Meuse-Argonne sector of the Western Front exists a time capsule of a century ago. On the ground are piles of “stuff” left by soldiers at the end of WWI. A four year battle for this strategic high ground led to only stalemate and many violent attempts to blow up the opponent’s front line from below. A century later the hilltop looks like a moonscape. Large lists of soldiers missing-in-action are what remain. Men on both sides simply vanished without a trace from the massive forces of high tech explosives deployed as underground mines. The term “pink mist” was coined to describe what’s left after a human being was blown to bits by high-tech explosives. The spools of wire and hand tools in this picture were used to create the underground infrastructure that made modern mass destruction possible one hundred years ago. 17 kilometers of tunnels remain on the German side and 7 kilometers on the French side of Butte de Vauquois.
