Railroads played a huge role in WWI. This original French track runs along the side of a valley and connects numerous French WWI underground cities that were built at the beginning of WWI inside vast, centuries-old stone quarries that had been the source of building blocks for castles, cathedrals, fortresses and homes for hundreds of years before WWI. Rail technology was extensively used underground. Rail tunnels deep beneath the earth coursed for miles connecting different parts of the battlefield. WWI was a modern war fought by modern people. It’s a mirror through which we can see ourselves and understand that all the wonderful technologies that make modern life fast, efficient, exhilarating and powerful have a dark side capable of destroying everything we hold dear.
