Ringling Bros, Barnum and Bailey circus featured elephants in their spectacle for the last time yesterday. Their Indian elephants will be 'retired' to join 30 others at the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation, a 200-acre facility that says it now hosts 'the largest Asian elephant herd in the Western Hemisphere'. Although laudable, this action will do little to stem the demise of elephants in the world. Only about 800 Asian elephants males (with tusks) survive in India. Less than 400,000 elephants exist in the world, as compared to one billion six hundred thousand chickens.
