Photo by @renan_ozturk // caption by writer @m_synnott "He [the shaman] sprinkles water on the chicken's head. If the chicken shakes the water off it means it has given its consent to be sacrificed..." ~ Seconds after writing these words in my notebook, while #onassignment, the shaman chopped off the chicken's head, splattering my notebook in blood. There were ten of us hunched inside a magical bamboo enclosure secured with twine on a jungle hillside directly across from one of the honey cliffs. The shaman placed the chicken's head on a bamboo leaf altar covered with other offerings to Rangkemi, the wrathful monkey spirit that must be pacified with a blood offering before the honey harvest can begin. As the shaman Gungaman blessed Maule Dhan, the head honey hunter, several bees landed on the altar. ~ Then things happened that none of us can explain. Our main camera (the @reddigitalcinema) suddenly malfunctioned and refused to restart. At the same time the barometric pressure, as measured by an altimeter watch, spiked. Then it started to rain. I was warned: DO NOT leave the enclosure. An egg was cracked into a banana leaf bowl. The egg was pure with no inclusions - a good omen. Rangkemi had given his blessing. The honey hunt would be successful. ~ When the ceremony ended and we left the enclosure, the RED immediately started working again. The pressure dropped and the sun came out. I was left to wonder: what had I just experienced? Had we been visited by Rangkemi? There were certainly those among us who had no doubt. ~ Part of #thelasthoneyhunter expedition with @ben_knight @m_synnott @jetbutterflies @taylorfreesolo @camp4collective #feltsoulmedia
