Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Carving by French WWI soldier in an underground city close to the front line. Soldiers frequently placed nails in the stone walls of underground cities for practical purposes: to keep their clothing or food off the ground and away from rats. However, the placement of this nail directly into the forehead of this carved face may be satire about the unimaginable violence that soldiers on the front line were experiencing and inflicting on others. How did soldiers process the violence? They had lived peaceful lives before the war. The world had never seen the dehumanizing violence of modern high tech weapons capable of mass- destruction. As an emergency physician I’m trained to confront violence and process it as part of a team whose mission is focused on saving life, minimizing pain and doing everything humanly possibly to protect each individual patient from further harm. Unless we have experienced the horror of war and modern mass-destruction ourselves, there’s no way for us to really understand how the soldiers coped. Humor and satire making light of the extreme, unpredictable violence that was part of their daily lives, was a way to hold on to their humanity when the civility of the world around them was unraveling.
