On Memorial Day Weekend, a team of @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists fanned out across Chicago to document how violence there had affected people and neighborhoods. In 3 days, 64 people were shot, 6 of them dead. “Our goal was to cover the news, but with an added obligation to search for subtleties,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer @heislerphoto writes on our #lensblog. “To stop at scenes we might normally just drive past because they lacked visual drama. Or to visit places where shots rang out but no one — fortunately — was hit.” @heislerphoto, a former Chicago resident, took this photo on Sunday on the Far South Side, just after he photographed a 53-year-old woman who had been sitting on her bed on Saturday when she was hit by one of 6 shots fired outside. @heislerphoto spotted these children just around the corner from her home. Rashad Branscomb, who owns the horses and keeps them in a nearby suburb, was having a picnic with his family. He didn't know there'd been a shooting on Saturday.
