Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Somewhere between 500,000 and a million men were killed or wounded in the WWI battle over the strategically important French town called Verdun. The battle of Verdun was a battle of attrition. Both sides sought to wear down their enemy to the point of collapse by causing never-ending losses of men and supplies. Human beings were fed into this killing machine in a contest to see which side would be depleted first. Human lives became a commodity . . . almost like putting fuel into your car’s gas tank. The value of human life became nil. Verdun was never taken by the Germans. This building on the Meuse river in Verdun was the French officers’ dining hall during WWI.
