This child resting his head on his father’s shoulder reminds me of the initiatory travel I made with my son Delazad when he was fifteen. I had made a promise to him when he was a little boy, as he was always sad seeing me leaving so often for my reportages: one day, we’ll leave together and go round the world. The promise was kept: a few years later, I accompanied him on this encounter with the others and with himself – an encounter that every parent cherishes. Together, we crossed the world, travelling from Beijing to Paris for three months. By train, on foot, by plane … we had one guiding line: we wanted to testify to what we encountered and share it. We were in the middle of an intimate story which scale was universal. This travel was a kind a spiral: while we were at the center, this travel experience irradiates towards the others.
