Just behind where I’m standing is a small underground office where telephone lines converged from various parts of the underground system. As opposed to the WWI underground cities which comprise most of my work on The Hidden World of WWI, tunnels were smaller and often used for the sole purpose of blowing up the opponents’ trenches from below. Most of the time, they were mere crawl spaces without living quarters. In contrast, underground cities were large stone quarries created centuries prior to WWI that were converted to fully functioning cities with railways, hospitals, electricity, food systems, weapons storage, chapels and more. Tens of thousands of soldiers, on both sides of the war, lived underground. It was the only place where they could find safety from the high tech weaponry of the day.
