This #endangered Scaly-sided Merganser (photographed at @sylvanheights_birdpark) is showing off his funky hairstyle! Males of this species use their shiny green crest of feathers to impress females. Its long bill is full of pointed ridges that help them catch and hold wriggling fish underwater. Sadly, illegal hunting, deforestation, river pollution and drowning in fishing nets have led to this species' rapid decline. The survival of this unique duck depends on habitat preservation, public education and an end to illegal hunting.
