A grizzly bear cub suddenly breaks into a gallop after realising that his mum, and sibling, have wandered off in the opposite direction. This image was captured in Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park and it’s a place that I’ll be returning to this September to lead two photographic trips for www.tatraphotographyworkshop.com It’s a sensational place for photography, set against a stunning Alaskan backdrop of towering mountains and mist shrouded forests. Our trip will be timed to coincide with the silver salmon run but as well as fishing bears (not from platforms) there’ll also be mums with spring cubs, mums with yearlings and lone adult males and of curse I’ll be alongside you to give you as much or as little tuition as you’d like. With this encounter, which are always supervised by our experienced guide, we were able to lie on the ground as a mum and two cubs wandered over in our direction. Familiar with the presence of respectful people the bears here are so relaxed and this family were happily grazing on the grasses and shrubs as we quietly captured some images. In fact, all of the images promoting the trip on Tatra’s website, including this one, were all captured by me during a one week trip and so you can imagine what the image potential is. It is no exaggeration to say that this is the best place that I’ve ever been for photography so I hope that some of you will consider coming with me to experience these magnificent bears for yourselves.
