Leda Antonia Machado endured the Cuban revolution and the decades of deprivation that followed. But even her likeness couldn't outlast the hypercapitalism of New York real estate. The mural artists @joseparla and @JR plastered Leda’s portrait on the side of the @brycewolkowitz gallery in Chelsea as part of a 2013 exhibition. The pair discovered Leda in 2012, when they were interviewing and photographing elderly residents of Havana for a street art project. When the photographer @rivka_s_katvan saw their mural in Chelsea, she was intrigued enough to photograph it. And, as she returned over the next 2 and a half years, she watched the figure slowly disappear behind construction. “They did it with no heart,” she said. “They don’t have a sense of art and beauty. All they see is dollar signs.” @joseparla was more philosophical about the erasure. “It’s the story of my life,” he said. “When you’re painting on the street, you know you’re going to get covered up. It’s ephemeral and we accept that.”
