Photo by @FransLanting: Elephants are the last surviving members of an ancient order of trunked giants which began to proliferate 50 million years ago and evolved into more than a hundred species. Today only two species remain—the African and Asian elephants—and both face great threats to their survival. At a waterhole in Botswana, I lay prone in the dust with bull elephants towering above me to contrast the monumental columns of their legs with the diminutive form of an impala. This is one of the signature images for my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time.”For the 10th anniversary of LIFE, it will be performed at Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival on July 20, 2016.
