We now have 3 Hartmann’s mountain zebras at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. Yvonne and Xolani (our 2 females) have been recommended to breed with Raylan (our male). Our scientists will be studying them to help develop assisted reproduction techniques vital to the species’ conservation. Assisted reproduction techniques, like artificial insemination, help preserve the genetic diversity of species with small populations. In the wild, the zebras live in small herds in dry mountain habitats in Namibia. #WeSaveSpecies
