Want to relax on a New York City beach? Join the crowd. Outdoor time used to be the perfect antidote to the bustle and frustration of urban life. But these days, more people than ever are jamming into New York’s public parks, pools and beaches, filling the most popular ones to bursting, creating noise and trash problems and making the experience altogether less enjoyable for those looking for a bit of serenity. @centralparknyc alone could see a record 42 million visits from residents and tourists this year. Of course, NYC’s prime recreational areas have long been crowded, especially the beaches — a breath of fresh sea air for apartment dwellers. But at a time when tourism is soaring and the city’s population is larger than ever (8.5 million), the sprawling public park system has never been busier, according to park officials, volunteers and conservancy groups. @george_etheredge took this photo of a very crowded #RockawayBeach on a Saturday late in July. #?
