What do you get when you take 2 small Tuscan towns — one famous for red wine, the other for truffles and organic grain — and merge them? A municipal marriage of convenience. Left with only 3 town officials, San Giovanni d’Asso (population: 853; speciality: truffles) can no longer deliver basic services to its citizens on a daily basis. So the mayor sought help from its neighbor 10 miles to the south, Montalcino (population: 5,070; specialty: Brunello wine). As the 2 towns consider a merger, others across Italy are faced with a similar choice. For years, the country has been pushing its smallest communities to join forces. But a merger could blur cherished identities formed over the centuries — especially important in rural Tuscany, where the landscape sometimes still resembles that of the Middle Ages. Nadia Shira Cohen took this photo of Montalcino with San Giovanni d'Asso in the distance. In October, residents of the 2 communities will vote on the potential merger. #Tuscany
