Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety If I was forced to choose which mammal in the UK that I most enjoy photographing then it’d have to be the mountain hare. Not only are these wonderfully confiding and charismatic animals a joy to spend time with but I also enjoy the physical challenge of spending time in their mountainous environment. The Scottish mountains at any time of the year are sensationally beautiful with vast open expanses of wild land. In winter however, with the hills covered in snow and ice that experience is ratcheted up several notches, as is the physicality of even reaching the remote mountains that they call home. This image was taken at an old site that I used to visit, high in the remote Monadhliath mountains where the walk in was a minimum 3 hours but if there was snow and it was passable then it was over 4 hours. In those days there were very few UK wildlife photographers that had any decent images of these fantastic creatures but in recent years a new, much more accessible site has been discovered with only a 30-45 minute walk in. All of a sudden there are a lot more photographers with mountain hare images and a lot more people have a real chance of experiencing the magic of spending time in their company, which can only be a good thing. Even so, my innate urge to stay away from the masses, so that I can both enjoy the solitude and produce unique work means that whilst I do visit this site I always venture much higher into the hills. That way, when I capture a moment like this curious female I know that it is an image that reflects a truly unique experience.
