This beautiful image is from a hand coloured glass lantern slide showing a woman wearing a "Feng Guan" (Phoenix Coronet) decorated with pearls and other jewels. She is probably a bride with silk apparel, embroidered with peaches and flowers. Another possibility is that this woman is about to give a traditional Chinese opera performance.

This image is from a collection of glass slides taken by the Russian-born photographer Serge Vargassoff (1906-1965). Vargassoff established himself as a professional photographer at the age of 20 in Peking (Beijing), China and became a long-term resident of the city.
