The photographer @markhartman’s portrait series “Island” isn’t really about Coney Island. Scroll through his feed: no hot dogs, no Wonder Wheel, no boardwalk. Just people, like this woman, Marina Eydelman, a nurse who lives in Brighton Beach. “Her message was to not waste any time in life,” @markhartman told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “Life’s not about money; it’s not about material wealth. It’s really about connecting with people, experiences, traveling, trying to help who you can.” To celebrate #LaborDay, we’re sharing some of @markhartman’s street portraits — or, should we say, beach portraits — from #ConeyIsland.
