Santiago Calatrava’s soaring Oculus, with One World Trade Center to the right. “The Oculus is — and was always intended to be — a shopping mall with an ancillary transportation purpose,” writes the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ columnist David W. Dunlap. Last week, on his first visit to the @westfieldworldtradecenter, he felt both heartened and dispirited. The Oculus was teeming with people, but there was little to suggest that the shopping center occupies consecrated ground. The day after 9/11, David recalls, New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani urged New Yorkers to “go about a normal day.” The mayor said: “Take the day as an opportunity to go shopping, be with your children. Do things. Get out. Don’t feel — don’t feel locked in.” When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping, David writes. “I don’t think he meant that shopping would solve the problems of a city struggling to awaken from an unparalleled nightmare. But it was the first thing that came to his mind.” On Sunday, as the 15th anniversary of 9/11 is marked with a solemn ceremony at the trade center, @westfieldworldtradecenter will turn its billboards over to video programming by the @911memorial. @rpnytimes took this photo of the #Oculus last week.
