Photo by @renan_ozturk // Words by @jetbutterflies #TheLastHoneyHunter story ~ A langur monkey (Semnopithecus schistaceus) stares back at @renan_ozturk in the remote eastern Nepal jungle minutes before departure to Kathmandu. ~ “I was trapped in a spider’s web in the middle of a cliff. I had no way out. I saw a large white monkey on the cliff’s edge. He lowered his tail to me, I grabbed ahold, and was lifted to the top.” This was how Maule Dhan described a dream that he had when he was only 15 - a dream that secured his place as the only person in his community who could harvest the wild cliff honey, and a dream that no one else in Sadhi has seen again, leaving Maule Dhan as the last practitioner of the tradition. ~ The white monkey in his dream is the living manifestation of the fearsome forest spirit Rongkemi. Equal parts god, demon, animal and spirit, Rongkemi inhabits the difficult places where few humans can tread. ~ Shooting for this project, we took great care to appease Rongkemi and to respect the Kulung traditions surrounding the harvest. But we were never sure if our presence as foreigners would upset the delicate balance of the Kulung spirit world. But then as we were all packed up and waiting at our remote landing site for our helicopter shuttle back to Kathmandu a dozen white monkeys came down out of the forest as if to see us off. We were speechless, and looked to Maule Dhan who simply said “Rongkemi” and smiled. A good omen, finally. ~ For more on this story follow @camp4collective @sadiequarrier @irving_matthew @climber.abiral @jetbutterflies @renan_ozturk
