Southern Right Whales engage in courtship near New Zealand’s Auckland Islands. These whales reach lengths of up to 45 feet, and weights of over 70 tons. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, their populations have slowly recovered due to greater conservation and protection efforts.
North Atlantic Right Whales, cousins of the whales photographed here, are the most endangered whales on the planet, with only about 500 remaining. Because they are ‘urban whales’ and live along the eastern seaboard of North America, they are frequently hit by ships, entangled in fishing gear and are effected by pollution.
