The photographer @justmiel took this photo of the city beach on the Dnieper River in Kiev in July 2015. Last night @justmiel — who taught herself photography by studying the legendary photo essays of W. Eugene Smith — has been awarded the @eugenesmithfund’s 2016 grant in humanistic photography. @justmiel, 43, was recognized for her portrait of modern Russia as seen by Russians who have become ethnic minorities in former Soviet republics. “It is easy to have enthusiasm when you are young, but if you are over 40 or 50 and still producing stories no matter what, and you still believe in documentary photography like I do, it is not always so easy to carry on,” @justmiel said. “This is a prize specifically for not giving up, for commitment and stubbornness.” Visit the link in our profile to see more of her photos on the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog.
