An area of the border between the United States (right) and Mexico (left) with no large fence, near Nogales. One of the most tightly guarded stretches of the U.S.-Mexico border is around the city of Nogales, which straddles the border. American Nogales, orderly and somniferous, pushes up against Mexican Nogales, a metropolis of 300,000 where the Sinaloa cartel looms large. The fence itself is a formidable sight, spanning about one-third of the 2,000-mile frontier from California to Texas, and patrolled by about 20,000 agents. It was built at a cost of $4 million per mile, which includes an array of military-style fortifications. This #nytweekender, we’re sharing #nytopinion photos by Tomás Munita, who spent time along the border with @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @declanjwalsh in September.
