In Bangladesh, Tareq Manawer learned to craft branches into makeshift bats. Ashekin Rozon practiced his swing with his brother in their cramped bedroom. And Raju Rahman grew up hitting balls in the city of Rajshahi. These boys form the core of the cricket team at Brooklyn International High School, which only accepts students who have been in this country 4 years or fewer. While cricket is an obsession in the Indian subcontinent, Britain, the West Indies, southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand, it’s not as visible in the United States. But in 2008, the NYC Department of Education formed what officials believe is still the only public high school cricket league in the U.S. The teams play an increasingly popular version of the sport, known as Twenty20. It’s faster and quicker than usual — which is not to be confused with fast or quick. While on assignment for @nytimessports this summer, @ryanchristopherjones photographed the #cricket team from Brooklyn International High School watching a match at Marine Park in Brooklyn.
