It's been just 6 years since @BritishBakeoff first went on air, but the show has fundamentally changed the way the British regard baking, dessert-eating and even their own culture of sweets. The “Bake Off Effect,” as it’s known, has inspired a resurgence in home baking, a noticeable increase in the quality of baked goods sold all over the country, and a growing number of people to pursue careers as professional pastry chefs. With these trends in mind, @clarkbar set out to make a proper British tea cake. The traditional layer cake you see here is made up of 2 buttery, tender #spongecake rounds that sandwich a thick layer of jam and, often, a dollop of sweetened whipped cream. It’s a simple, homey confection that works as well with a cup of afternoon tea as it does for dessert. @andrewscrivani took this photo while on assignment for @nytfood.
