A sailboat on the Detroit River as seen from Riverfront-Lakewood East Park. Several canals cut through this neighborhood in Detroit’s Jefferson-Chalmers district, making it a prime spot for smugglers to make landfall. While the U.S.’s Southern border attracts much more attention, its border with Canada offers more opportunity for illegal crossing. In many places, there are few signs of where the United States ends and Canada begins; some homes, farms and businesses even sit astride the 2 countries. Nearly 18,000 Border Patrol agents are stationed along the U.S.’s border with Mexico, but only 2,000 agents patrol its 5,500-mile border with Canada, the largest between 2 countries in the world. Officials worry that this lack of personnel, as well as the border’s expanse and remoteness, leaves the U.S. vulnerable to exploitation. @seanproctor photographed this #⛵ at sunset while on #nytassignment in Detroit.
