Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety I’m delighted to announce that this mountain hare image has been awarded in the Mammals category of the 2016 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards @nhm_wpy. This competition stands alone as the pinnacle of all the wildlife photography competitions and it typically receives 50000+ entries per year, whittled down to what the judges consider to be the best 100 images. This image was actually taken in 2014 and I overlooked it when entering Wildlife Photographer of the Year last year, preferring some other mountain hare images that I felt were more unique, more creative and had more interest. But this of course reflects the subjectivity of wildlife photography competitions and how difficult it can be to predict what the judges in any particular year are looking for. This image of course might not be to everyone’s taste but I wanted to reveal the starkness of the landscape in which these hardy herbivores live, and the extraordinary challenges that they face in the depths of winter. This is why, even when I had the three hares in the frame, I continued to zoom out, showing more and more of the icy and inhospitable habitat in which they live. A big shout out goes to fellow @thephotosociety members @timlaman @ronan_donovan @thomaspeschak @chamiltonjames and @stefanounterthiner for continuing to produce their astonishing and inspirational imagery.
