Photo by @ronan_donovan // A juvenile mountain gorilla grabs a handful of bamboo shoots while a crowd of farmers gather to watch.
As the population of mountain gorillas continues to expand, this scene could become more common with humans and gorillas sharing the same landscape.
As shown in my last post, the hard edge between the forest and farmland here in northern Rwanda means these two great apes - humans and gorillas - are living in close proximity, and sometimes competing for the same resources, in this case, bamboo and eucalyptus. The gorillas here don't eat any human crops, but up until ~10 years ago the gorillas didn't eat eucalyptus either, which is now a common occurrence.
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (@savinggorillas) works alongside the Rwandan Development Board to find solutions for these potential human-wildlife conflicts, such as pushing these gorillas back into the forest to avoid potential disease spillover between humans, gorillas and livestock.
The challenges of managing megafauna always depends on managing the human communities that live in proximity to these large animals. Learn more about this topic with @savinggorillas and see more images from this assignment here @ronan_donovan
