I am free.” In April, Behrouz Boochani, an Iranian refugee, climbed a tree to avoid being permanently resettled in Papua New Guinea by Australian authorities. In #NYTOpinion, Roger Cohen writes about 900 broken men living in paradise: asylum seekers from across the world who were banished by Australia to a remote corner of the Papua New Guinea archipelago. Their lives on Manus Island have been hell, “a 3 and a half year exercise in mental and physical cruelty conducted in near secrecy beneath the green canopy of the tropics," he writes.
