When @fabianfiechter decided to document the lives of Roman Catholic nuns who work inside a German hospital, he received a warm welcome. The photographer, who’s also a practicing nurse, was once a student at St. Elisabeth’s Hospital in Lörrach, not far from the Swiss border. In those days, about 30 nuns worked at the hospital and lived in an adjoining convent. Today, only 5 remain. But @fabianfiechter’s photos aren’t lonely or sad; instead, they’re filled with warmth, tenderness and, at times, even humor. They highlight a certain joy that carry these women through the day. “Patients come and go, but these women have always been there for decades,” said @fabianfiechter, who was also born at the hospital. “I’ve worked in different hospital, huge university hospitals without nuns. In this hospital, it’s a special spirit. It doesn’t matter if you’re Christian or not, these nuns make it familiar. It’s not like an institution.” @fabianfiechter took this portrait of Sister Maria-Xaveria, one of the nuns. Visit the link in our profile to see more images on the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog.
