The go-to explanations for why so many men have dropped out of the labor force in the United States don’t apply to Krystin Stevenson. She doesn’t turn her nose up at jobs that are considered women’s work. She hasn’t been swallowed by the wildfire of opioid addiction, dogged by a brush with the law or sidelined with a disability. But Krystin, a 31-year-old mother of 2, had to give up her $40,000-a-year job when her fragile support network collapsed. Now, she’s is part of the growing percentage of Americans who are neither in a job nor hunting for one. Men have been the focus of much of the concern about those disappearing from the American work force. But women are also part of the trend. Krystin needs to solve her child care problem, but like many men, she’s looking for the right fit. “I have 2 degrees, so I don’t want to work at McDonald’s or Jiffy Lube,” she said. @mattnager photographed Krystin Stevenson at her home in Colorado.
