Mikhail, a 29-year-old billiard-equipment salesman, practices his skateboard moves in Moscow’s Triumfalnaya Square near a statue of Vladimir Mayakovsky, a poet who extolled the 1917 revolution. Young Russians in their mid-twenties were barely 10 years old when Vladimir Putin became prime minister in 1999 and later president. Their lives have been shaped by economic expansion, autocratic rule, social media, censorship, gay oppression, and a revived sense of nationalism. They are children of his system, in Russian described as Pokolenie Putina, the Putin generation.
