Nine miles outside of Pittsburgh rests Braddock, Pennsylvania, a steel town where Andrew Carnegie started his first mill in 1875. While Braddock is often celebrated for revitalizing the Rust Belt, the resulting pollution continues to leave a devastating impact. It eroded the environment, which in turn left the city’s predominantly black residents with terminal illnesses. Photographer and @TEDFellow LaToya Ruby Frazier is one of them. Through still lifes, landscapes, and portraits like the image depicted here, LaToya strives to create a visual narrative revealing the steel industry’s effect on the bodies of her family and community.

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are showcasing some of our favorite #TEDTalks from African-American speakers. To see more work from LaToya’s project, “The Notion of Family,” watch her talk at go.ted.com/latoyaruby
