Miss T’s dark skin, hair, and outfit set her apart from the bare white space that surrounds her—she is the sole focus: beautiful and mysterious, pensive and patient. When Hendricks painted this picture in the late 1960s, his model’s Afro and black clothes were associated with the Black Power movement. Through her style, appearance, and posture, Miss T presents herself as a self-assured vision of African American womanhood. #BlackHistoryMonth
