“The first few days, we didn’t see a single whale,” writes the photographer @klausthymann for @nytmag. “But you get a long way with determination.” For this week’s Voyages column, @klausthymann traveled to the South Pacific archipelago of Vava’u, which consists of 61 islands. Each fall, it’s an stop for migrating pilot and humpback whales and their newborn calves. #Underwater, @klausthymann — who did a #freediving course to train for the trip — saw pilot whales first. “Seeing them in very rare,” he writes. “They’re fast and about twice the length of humans.” Then came the humpbacks. “They did a swim-by, which is like a minute in real time but felt like an eternity in the water.” When @klausthymann took this photo, he’d spotted a school of fish in a cave. “I had my swimming partner go in to give a sense of scale. I used a flash, and you can see the light reflected off the fish.” Visit the link in our profile to see more of his #underwater photos in this week’s @nytmag.
