Zhou Tao and I visited the Shenzhen site where a landslide incident took place in 2015. Although it looks similar to other construction sites, one gigantic hill of construction waste collapsed here, disastrously submerging an entire village. The government now plans to turn the site into a park. Zhou captured the footage of a rescue team in his video installation “Land of the Throat.” Zhou explores the uncanny relation between the human body and urban infrastructure in the video: the rippling surface of such mounds of waste begins to look like the landscape of a body: veins, muscles, blood, and skin.
