Parade marshals gathered for a midnight toast at the Mystics of Time Ball in Mobile, Alabama. The ball is held in a convention center auditorium, but only certain people get a floor pass. Many guests watch from an upper level of stadium seating. Our staff photographer @damonwinter traveled to Mobile to take look inside the often-secretive world of mystic societies — groups like the Mystics of Time — that convene to celebrate #MardiGras every year. The first mystic societies formed in Mobile in the 1830s, but wasn’t until 1894 that the African-American community got its own. This year, more than 70 groups hosted Mardi Gras events. But even today, the mystic societies are largely segregated by race and class. At the Mystics of Time ball, members wore masks to help disguise their appearances and make it easier to celebrate with abandon.
