I met a talented artist named Farhad Nouri, who is ten and half years old from Afghanistan. His dream is to get to Switzerland or the United States where he can have a life free from war and study his craft. He shared his drawings with me. They were extraordinary, the product of no training whatsoever. His favorite artist is Picasso. He plays with the style of Jackson Pollock and showed me his sketch of Angelina Jolie, "she rescues children," he said. I asked him if he had bad dreams from the war. He said "sometimes", and began to tell a story or a reoccurring dream (I'm not sure which). His father was outside their house, he heard gunshots, and then he broke down in tears remembering how terrified he was that his father might not come home. After recovering, we later sat on a bench outside talking about his art. I am one of the lucky recipients of an original Farhad Nouri that will hang proudly on my living room wall. My dream is to grant Farhad and his family their dream: to escape the limbo of the refugee crisis and be welcomed to a new country, a new home, a new life. I explained to him that I would be sharing our visit and asked if there was anything he wanted to say to the people of the world. He was quiet, thinking, and then said; kindness, "we need kindness."
