There's no compassion for single young men. No sympathy. They're escaping a horrible war themselves, trying to continue their education, trying to simply stay alive. Because the world is afraid of single young men as potential terrorists, they are pushed to the back of the line, feeling that they'll never have the opportunity through legal means to cross the borders and continue their journey to safety.
Borders are essentially closed until the EU states can come together to create a humanitarian system to rescue these vulnerable souls.
Like many others, who currently have almost no other options, risking their limited financial resources and in some cases their lives, they believe their only hope is to put their lives in the hands of smugglers. And so they wait and wait in dilapidated, run-down warehouses not fit for human beings.
Most of these young men, the majority from Afghanistan, had been students, and were deeply grateful that I was willing to come into their space and listen to their stories, their deep frustration at having their education so dramatically interrupted. And, as one young man said, "I wasn't even allowed to play cricket on the street without fear of losing my life." The graffiti on the wall summed up their feelings best: "with guns you can kill terrorists, with education you can kill terrorism... We need education. No more war."
