Natalie bringing more truth as always ::: Repost @iheartfeeleez ・・・ Isn't it wild that when the kids start acting crazy - jumping on the couch, or screaming at each other, or crying about almost anything, or rubbing sand into the carpet - very suddenly everything feels very crappy. Not just that particular behavior but EVERYTHING in your life. Suddenly the house is too small, too dirty, too expensive, and your partner is too macho, too tuned-out, too lazy, too cheap, and your hair/face/body is too grey, too old, too fat, and the dog is an idiot, and your mom is cruel, and the neighbors are judgmental. In the blink of an eye we can hate most everything. That's good ol' brain chemistry again. The same process that serves us by giving us superhuman strength in an emergency also completely messes with us during regular life. The brain can't tell the difference between the threat of a savage tiger and the "threat" of sand in the carpet. It shuts the lights off and goes primal. It's a bummer! Because it doesn't feel good to feel dissatisfied, to see our home and family as doomed and bleak. The trick is to turn the lights back on, to become once again available for optimism and resilience. How? • Notice your triggers. See them coming and emotionally prepare. • Name your feelings out loud. • Get touch - from yourself or another. • Move. • Breathe. • Remind yourself that brain chemistry is affecting your view. • Remember that the house, partner, kids, dog, or neighbor is NOT responsible for your feelings. • Understand that these feelings need to come out, and will find something to trigger you in order to do so, no matter how well you control your environment. • Save any action for when the proverbial lights come back on. • And be ever so kind to yourself. You're doing great. xo #emotionalintelligence #empathy #gentleparenting #family #feeleeznuggets #selflove
