Outtake from my recent story “The Putin Generation”, published in the December issue of National Geographic Magazine. “Sabantuy” in Kazan, Russia is a traditional Tatar summer festival, popular with both the young and old alike. Attendees celebrate traditional Tatar cuisine, games, folklore, and crafts. As if entering into a virtual reality, a participant traverses through a mural representing rural Tatarstan. The city of Kazan, known as the Third Capital of Russia and home to roughly 1.2 million residents, is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, an ancient Muslim region in the heart of Russia. The rich and fascinating Tatar culture of Kazan has, for centuries, widely proclaimed tolerance with other religions and ethnicities.
