In 1992, the photojournalist Joseph Rodríguez (@rollie6x6) started documenting the lives of gang members in #BoyleHeights, a majority Mexican-American district on Los Angeles’s East Side. The portraits that emerged were the opposite of the images of gang members that were appearing in the news media at the time. Yes, there were guns and tattoos, but there was also family, in spite of — sometimes amid — the violence. Decades later, with support from @economichardship, the photographer returned to Boyle Heights to see what had become of his former subjects. One survivor: Mark Olvera, who @rollie6x6 photographed with his wife, Veronica last year. Mark told @rollie6x6 that he’d been in and out of jail since he was 14; at 36, when this photo was taken, he’d been out of prison for about 5 years. Today, Mark takes pride in his life with Veronica, his 5 children, and his steady work as a union painter. “I respect life, I let the living live,” he told the photographer. But he warned: “Just don’t crack my eggshell. I speak as a father from the lifestyle.” Visit the link in our profile to read more in #nytopinion.
